Blue Sapphire Jewelry
Sapphire and ruby are the same gem, both corundum, with ruby being red and all other colors being sapphire. Next hardest gem to diamond, which is the hardest natural material known to man, sapphire is well suited to any type of jewelry. Current sources include Kashmir in the Himalayas (extremely rare) , Burma, Sri Lanka with trade name Ceylon, Thailand, trade name Kanchantaburi, Cambodia, Tanzania, Kenya, Montana and most recently Madagascar. Madagascar gems are worth watching as they mimic the finest sources, Kashmir and Burma.
The pinks from Madagascar are a very good investment at this time. A wide variety of colors are available with the rarest color pink orange called padparadscha and even some from Tanzania that have the alexandrite color change from red to green under different lighting sources. Also commonly available are star sapphires in a wide variety of colors. (asteriated).
A common misconception about blue sapphire perpetuated by the chain operations is that the dark almost black sapphires are the best. This is far from truth. Your best stones appear blue in almost all lighting with the purer and more vivid blues of medium to medium dark color being the most desired.  Sapphire (Blue)
