Emerald Jewelry
Possibly the riskiest stone you could buy due to the amount of inclusions characteristic to this gem which is the birthstone for May. This is the only gem to have a name given to this included character, jardin or emeralds garden. If not your birthstone, we generally recommend other gems like tsavorite garnet or chrome tourmaline especially if you are not willing to pay for the higher qualities of emerald which can run into the thousands of dollars. The greatest problem with emerald is the oiling which masks inclusions. I offer re-oiling of stones and I have taken emeralds which have an apparent value of $200.00 and with the oiling process they look like $2000.00 gems. The process is temporary and these hidden cracks are weak and subject to damage.
This can be a beautiful gem and for those who must have emeralds we recommend you take more care in buying and actually note the characteristics of the inclusions, which will always be there even if you pay $6,000 per carat. By lighting a stone from the side with a high intensity light (take care not to overheat) or penlight the cracks will become obvious. You can expect a multitude of inclusions. With magnification you can weed out the stones with open cracks, known as veils, which travel across more than half the stone or travel across a corner of the gem which is were the prongs of the mounting will be placed, which places stress at this area and will cause breakage.
