There’s a reason the pear shape has been a favorite of gemstone cutters and jewelry designers for generations. Sometimes called a teardrop shape, a well-cut pear gemstone combines the brilliance of a round or oval stone with an elegant tapered point. The result is a shape that shows off color beautifully while giving a piece of jewelry a little more character than the traditional cuts.

What Makes a Great Pear Cut Gemstone?

Pear shaped gems can be surprisingly difficult to cut well. The two sides should have a pleasing balance, the shoulders shouldn't look too wide or too narrow, and the point needs to line up naturally with the center of the stone. With faceted gems, the facet pattern also plays an important role in how much brilliance and color you see when the stone moves.
