    Paraiba Tourmaline: Color, Origin & Cost Guide — From Brazil to Ethiopia's Emerging Deposits

    During our recent travel to Bangkok (September 2026), our family ran into some Paraiba Tourmaline from Ethiopia. Now this type of tourmaline was sold at many of the dealers we spoke to, but not many dealers are selling it from Ethiopia, most are from Brazil and Mozambique.     "The Swiss Gemmological Institute SSEF has received credible reports from trade sources that indicate a new deposit of copper-bearing tourmaline has been discovered in Ethiopia."

    Few gemstones generate the kind of excitement that Paraiba tourmaline does. Its electric blue-green glow looks almost lit from within, and for decades that color has been tied to one small mining district in Brazil. But the story of where this stone comes from has been changing for years, first Mozambique, then Nigeria, and now, a name most jewelry buyers have never associated with tourmaline at all: Ethiopia.

    This guide walks through what actually makes a tourmaline "Paraiba," where it's found, what drives its price, how to think about quality and treatment, and where Ethiopian material fits into a market that has historically been defined by Brazilian rarity.

    What Is Paraiba Tourmaline?

    Paraiba tourmaline is a variety of elbaite tourmaline colored by trace amounts of copper,  and often manganese, which is what produces its signature neon blue, teal, or green-blue saturation. That copper content is the whole story: it's the reason "Paraiba-type" color doesn't show up in ordinary blue or green tourmaline, and it's the reason gemologists treat copper-bearing tourmaline as its own category rather than just another color variety.

    The name comes from Paraíba, the Brazilian state where the stone was first discovered in the late 1980s. For years, "Paraiba tourmaline" and "Brazilian tourmaline" were essentially interchangeable. That's no longer true and understanding why is the key to understanding both color and price today.

    Where Is Paraiba Tourmaline Found?

    The short answer is: fewer places than almost any other gemstone people ask about by name, which is part of why rarity questions ("how rare is paraiba tourmaline," "is paraiba tourmaline valuable") come up so often. Right now, four sources matter.

    Brazil. The original deposit, discovered in the state of Paraíba in the late 1980s. Brazilian material set the standard for the "Paraiba" name and is still considered the historical benchmark for the finest color.

    Mozambique. Copper-bearing tourmaline turned up in Mozambique in the mid-2000s, and it changed the market significantly, for the first time, Paraiba-type color was available in larger sizes and at greater volume than Brazil could supply.

    Nigeria. A smaller and more recent source, generally producing lower volumes and smaller rough than Mozambique.

    Ethiopia. The newest name in this conversation. Ethiopian deposits of copper-bearing tourmaline are a recent addition to the supply chain, and the market is still in the early stages of understanding this material, its typical color range, common sizes, and how consistently it compares to established sources. If you search for "paraiba tourmaline Ethiopia" today, you'll find almost nothing written about it, which says less about the stone and more about how new this origin still is to buyers and even to much of the trade.

    That gap is worth pausing on. Ethiopia is already a well-known name in colored gemstones, Ethiopian opal, in particular, built a strong reputation over the last fifteen years for vivid play-of-color and became a legitimate rival to Australian and Mexican opal in the eyes of collectors. Ethiopian tourmaline doesn't have that reputation yet. But origins rarely start out well known, Mozambique tourmaline wasn't a household term in 2005 either.

    Paraiba Tourmaline Color Guide

    Color is the single biggest factor separating an average Paraiba tourmaline from an exceptional one, and it's also the most common thing people ask about.

    The color range spans neon blue, blue-green, teal/turquoise, violet-blue, and green, with the most prized stones showing a vivid, saturated "neon" quality that genuinely looks unlike other blue or green gems. That neon effect comes specifically from the copper content, the higher and more balanced the copper (with manganese contributing to hue shifts), the more intense the color.

    Color also tends to vary somewhat by origin, which is part of why serious buyers ask where a stone was mined and not just what color it is:

    • Brazilian stones are generally regarded as producing the most saturated, purest neon blues and violet-blues, the color the whole category is judged against.
    • Mozambique material runs a wider range, often leaning more green or teal, generally in a slightly less intense saturation than the finest Brazilian stones, though exceptional pieces do occur.
    • Nigerian stones tend toward greener and sometimes duller tones compared to Brazilian or Mozambique material.
    • Ethiopian material is still being characterized by the trade. Early reports and specimens suggest color that can lean toward green-blue tones, but it's too early to generalize confidently across the deposit, which is exactly the kind of detail that will matter more as more Ethiopian rough reaches the market and gets properly studied.

    If you're evaluating a stone, don't rely on origin alone, ask to see the stone itself, ideally under different lighting, since Paraiba color can shift noticeably between daylight and incandescent light.

    Is Paraiba Tourmaline Rare?

    Yes, genuinely rare, not just "rare" as a marketing term. Fine copper-bearing tourmaline occurs in a small number of known deposits worldwide, and top-color, larger stones are scarce even within those deposits. Some gem dealers describe well-saturated Paraiba tourmaline over a few carats as rarer than similarly sized fine diamonds, which is part of why prices at the top end can be so high.

    A new source like Ethiopia raises an interesting question: does more supply make the stone less rare? In practice, rarity in this market is judged by color quality and size more than by the existence of another mine. A large, low-saturation stone from any origin, including Ethiopia, isn't competing with a small, vivid neon-blue Brazilian stone, they're different tiers of the same category. What a new deposit does change is availability at the lower and middle tiers of the market, which historically has been where Mozambique material made the biggest impact.

    How Much Is Paraiba Tourmaline Worth?

    Price is where most buyers' questions land, and for good reason, Paraiba tourmaline can range from a few hundred dollars per carat to tens of thousands for exceptional Brazilian material.

    Several factors drive that range:

    • Color saturation — the deeper and more neon the color, the higher the price per carat, by a wide margin
    • Carat size — large fine-color stones are disproportionately rare, so price per carat climbs steeply with size
    • Clarity — copper-bearing tourmaline often has natural inclusions; eye-clean stones command a premium
    • Origin — Brazilian material generally carries the highest price for comparable color, both for its quality track record and its scarcity
    • Treatment — heat treatment is common and accepted in the trade, but untreated stones can command a premium when documented

    Origin-based pricing roughly follows the order the deposits were established: Brazilian material at the top, Mozambique offering strong color at more accessible price points, Nigerian material generally more affordable still, and Ethiopian material, being newest to the market, currently priced more conservatively than established origins, largely because the trade hasn't yet built the pricing history, grading consensus, or brand recognition that Brazilian and Mozambique material has accumulated over years of trading. For buyers, that often means new origins offer a genuine value window: strong color-for-price ratios before broader recognition catches up. That's exactly what happened with Mozambique material in its early years on the market.

    Quality Factors: Clarity, Treatment & Authenticity

    Beyond color and size, a few quality factors matter for any Paraiba tourmaline purchase, regardless of origin.

    Treatment. Heat treatment is standard practice in the tourmaline trade and is widely accepted, provided it's disclosed. It typically improves color clarity and removes undesirable brownish tones without altering the fundamental copper-driven color mechanism. Reputable sellers should always disclose treatment status.

    Clarity. Copper-bearing tourmaline frequently grows with visible inclusions. Eye-clean or near-eye-clean stones are less common and priced accordingly.

    Authenticity and certification. Because "Paraiba tourmaline" is a specific gemological classification based on copper content, not just a color name, lab certification (from GIA or another recognized lab) confirming copper content is the most reliable way to verify a stone is correctly classified, especially for larger or higher-value purchases.

    Ethiopian material specifically is still being evaluated by labs and dealers for typical treatment practices and clarity characteristics. As with any newer origin, it's worth asking directly whether a specific Ethiopian stone has been treated and whether it's been lab-tested to confirm copper content, rather than assuming the same norms that apply to Brazilian or Mozambique material automatically carry over.
