Introducing our exquisite collection of peridot gemstones and jewelry . This collection showcases the beauty and rich history of one of the world's oldest gemstones. Peridot ranges in color from brown-green to the purest green hue. It has a MOHS hardness of 6.5-7 which makes it a popular choice for any type of jewelry setting. Its beginnings date back to 1500 BC when it was discovered and its name is derived from the Arabic word “faridat” which quite literally means “gem”. Its formation is a testament to the marvels of nature as it occurs in extreme conditions deep within the earth’s mantle, and is then brought to the surface by volcanic activity. It has even been found to exist, though rarely, within meteorites. Truly a remarkable gem. Localities where peridot can be found include Pakistan, Myanmar, the United States, China, Afghanistan, Tanzania, Vietnam, and Ethiopia. It belongs to the mineral class olivine and its crystal habit is typically orthorhombic.
Our first experience cutting Peridot was material from the San Carlos Apache reservation. This was the world’s primary peridot supply and the material typically cut 2 to 5 carat gems with a color that was mostly a less desirable yellow green. In the 1990s, a new supply was discovered. This first showed up at the Tucson gem and mineral show and was remarkable for its beautiful blue green color and large sizes. This supply continues today, which is considered to be the finest source of peridot. In the early 2020s a new source has revealed itself from Tanzania commonly called gogo peridot, named after the Wogogo tribe, who mine this material on their land. Like Pakistani Peridot, this material comes in extremely fine color and large sizes to over 25 carats.
Peridot is the celebrated birthstone of August and makes the perfect, timeless, statement of enduring strength set in any of your favorite metals. Choose from platinum, 14k white or yellow gold, or 18k white or yellow gold for your next peridot ring, pendant/necklace, or pair of earrings. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners are not recommended to care for this gem, making warm, soapy water the best option for cleaning. Also for you Jewelers, keep in mind not to place peridot in the pickle pot as it will etch the surface off a peridot.
